Dental Implants 101

man wearing shadesAre you thinking about getting a dental implant or implants? If yes, you are one of many! Take a look at some common dental implant questions to help you decide if they are the right choice for you.

Back to the Basics

You might be asking yourself, “What are dental implants?” A dental implant is an artificial root in the form of a tiny bio compatible post surgically implanted into your jaw. After the implant has healed, an abutment is attached to the post upon which a crown, bridge or denture is placed. Dental implants can:

  • Preserve your bones and gums
  • Replace a missing tooth or teeth
  • Prevent teeth from shifting
  • Provide a more stable chewing surface

The above uses are only a few of the numerous reasons to give dental implants a try – be sure to contact your dentist to learn about additional benefits.

The Procedure

As noted, dental implants are placed via oral surgery. After deciding to take advantage of dental implants, your dentist will either be able to place the implant(s) or will refer you to an oral surgeon. The healing process will depend on how many implants you have placed but most of the time within 24 – 48 hours you should be able to eat most foods. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your implant while it is in the healing stage.

Designed to appear as natural as possible, implant supported crowns and bridges are made to blend with your teeth. You can be confident, however, that once you heal completely – your dental implants will not only look natural, but they will also feel natural!
