Have you been considering dental implants to get your missing teeth replaced? Implants are an excellent choice for tooth replacement as they offer many features that their alternatives do not. Also, most dentists around the world highly recommend dental implants, owing to their advantages. But, are dental implants right for you? Is there any concern that would keep you from getting implants?

Are you the right candidate?

Getting implants will require you to satisfy a few conditions, only after which the dentist will confirm your candidacy. Some of the factors that are considered are:
  • Jawbone health
  • Jawbone size
  • Spacing available to place the implant
  • Healthy gum tissues
  • Overall health, including concerns such as blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
  • Health conditions that affect optimum healing of the bone structure

How does jawbone health affect implant candidacy?

Dental implants are inserted into the jawbone by making a tiny hole in place of the missing tooth. The jawbone has to be strong enough to hold the metal restoration firmly in place. Also, it has to be wide and thick enough to house the implant stud. In case the jawbone isn't healthy, the metal stud could get displaced or loosen from its socket, which leads to failure of the implant.

Will a bone graft be necessary?

In case the jawbone doesn't have enough strength and size, the dentist may suggest a bone graft to replenish its volume. During this, the dentist will extract bone tissues from a different part of the body, and graft it to the jawbone. It is carried out by means of surgery under the influence of anesthesia. Once the surgery is completed, the dentist may suggest a few months of healing for the new tissues to adhere to the existing bone.

How long will the entire procedure take?

Implant placement can be classified into phases, such as implant planning, implant placement surgery, healing period, and bonding the ceramic restoration. During the implant planning phase, an extensive diagnosis will be conducted to determine your candidacy. Scans and x-rays will be taken to get a better view of the underlying jawbone and tooth roots.

Implant placement is carried out with high precision. The dentist will place the metal implant stud in the jawbone with the use of highly-sophisticated devices. A healing period of three to six months will be suggested to allow the jawbone to grow around the implant and hold it firmly. After it is completed, the ceramic crown will be bonded to the implant with the help of an abutment. A few sessions will be required to ensure it fits perfectly without altering your bite.

Getting implants is a worthy investment, as they are known to last for more than ten years without any hassle. Also, they enable you to bite and chew food effectively while undergoing negligible wear.
