Excessive fluoride exposure: The use of instant formula with fluoridated water has been found to cause teeth discoloration in children.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe for Children?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends teeth whitening treatments for children above 14 years of age. This allows the gums to fully develop and reduce tooth sensitivity.  Also, children must meet the following criteria to undergo teeth whitening:

  • Fully calcified and permanent teeth enamel.
  • All orthodontic treatments are completed for your child.
  • All baby teeth have fallen and have permanent teeth in place.

Teeth Whitening Methods

Laser whitening or bleaching: Laser whitening and bleaching are done by a dentist. This process is quick and easy and proven to be safe.

Whitening kits: At-home whitening strips come in the form of gel or strips Whitening strips must be used under adult supervision. These products could lead to tooth sensitivity in some children. Consult your dentist when in doubt.

Whitening toothpaste: Brushing with tooth whitening paste can help remove stains and prevent discoloration. Always consult with your dentist to see whether the tooth whitening paste is safe for your child.

Custom dental gels and trays: Custom dental trays are personalized to ensure positive results. A professional whitening gel is applied directly to teeth by a dentist.

A tooth crown or false tooth: For stained teeth beyond repair, porcelain crowns could be suggested by dentists.
